upholstery
the aldan loveseat & sofa
The Aldan brings together a hand-built solid wood frame with traditional upholstery, hand-finished by upholsterer Amy Wood using natural and recycled fillings and time-honoured techniques.
Made to order as a loveseat or sofa, dismantlable into five parts for easier delivery, with fabric, dimensions seat depth and design specifics all chosen by you.
How to Choose
Bespoke upholstery comes down to two things working together, the frame and the finish. Solid hardwood, built to be repaired and re-covered, will outlast several rounds of fabric, where most upholstered furniture on the market is built on a softwood or composite frame designed to last only as long as the first cover does.
Oak has been the choice so far, but the frame can be built in a different British hardwood to suit your fabric or the room it's going into, worth thinking about both together rather than choosing one in isolation. If delivery access is a concern, a dismantlable design like this one can travel through a tighter doorway or up a staircase in five manageable sections.
Once the frame's decided, the finish is where you can really make it your own. Do you want a covered frame for a more traditional look, or an exposed frame where you can see the traditional hessian, some clients have even opted for a contrast fabric behind the frame. Do you prefer your fabric colour matched on the tacks, or a traditional steel upholstery tack? A clean seam on the arm, or a visible blanket stitch? All of these options we can talk through with you further to help you imagine a truly unique chair or sofa.
Our Approach
Traditional upholstery techniques, springs, webbing, and natural or recycled fillings, are used throughout, for comfort that holds its shape over years of use rather than sagging within a couple. Every piece is finished by Amy Wood using time-honoured hand techniques, not a factory production line.
