The Story

The Aldan was born out of a longing for a luxuriously large, comfortable place to lounge in the sun, and frustration at how heavy large furniture usually is to move.

After a long back-and-forth between the drawing board, the wood workshop and the upholstery workshop, with plenty of prototyping along the way, the design finally came together, a tapered back and graceful scroll arms taking inspiration from French antiques, with minimal legs keeping the design contemporary.

The frame can be left exposed, so the timber becomes part of the design, or fully covered for a softer, more traditional look, both options shown here. Whether built as a compact loveseat or stretched to a full sofa, the same proportions and detailing carry through, so it reads as one considered design rather than a smaller and larger version pretending to match.

Also designed so it can be dismantled into five manageable parts, useful not only for getting it through a tricky doorway or up a staircase, but for moving house entirely without needing to replace a piece you've already invested in.

Why Trew & Bold

Every piece at Trew & Bold is designed and made by Emily, from a workshop between Bristol and Bath, using timber sourced from British sawmills wherever possible. This piece is finished with traditional upholstery methods and techniques by the talented Amy Wood, using natural and recycled fillings rather than synthetic foam. Nothing is mass-produced or flat-packed, every piece is built to order and designed to be repaired and re-covered rather than replaced when a fabric eventually wears out, an approach to making that treats sustainability as a genuine material choice, not just a marketing word.
