The Aldan, Built to 2.8 Metres

The Brief

A sitting room needed a sofa long enough to seat a family comfortably, in a design that could still be delivered through a standard UK doorway, ruling out most made-to-measure upholstery, which tends to be built as one rigid frame.

The Design

The Aldan's standard proportions were scaled up to 2.8 metres, considerably beyond its usual size, while keeping every structural principle of the original design intact: the same exposed oak frame, the same tapered back and scroll arms taking their cue from French antique furniture, the same traditional upholstery.

The challenge wasn't just making it bigger, it was making sure a piece that size still felt proportionate, rather than like an oversized version of a smaller design.

The Detail

The frame was built to dismantle into five separate sections, each light enough to carry individually, then reassembled on site, the same approach used across every Aldan, but especially necessary at this scale. It's the detail that makes a piece this size actually deliverable into a real home, rather than a design that only works on paper.
